In this lecture, I introduce the Kondo effect, one of the most important correlation effects in condensed matter, and its impact on material properties. In the first part of this lecture, I start with the experimental discovery of a resistance minimum in metals including impurities, elucidate the explanation by Prof. Jun Kondo, and finally touch on recent topics of research on Kondo impurities. In the second part, I introduce strongly correlated Kondo lattice materials and explain recent challenges in Kondo insulators, such as quantum oscillations and unusual heat transport, that point to the existence of undiscovered quasiparticles in these materials.
